Results of Checkpoint

On March 14, 2015 the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sobriety checkpoint on MD Route 61 (Canal Parkway) at River Avenue in Cumberland, Maryland. The checkpoint began at approximately 2200 hours on March 14, 2015 and remained in operation until approximately 0200 hours on March 15, 2015.

A total of 558 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and all motorists were screened for signs of impairment and provided a safety brochure pertaining to the laws against drinking and driving. Several motorists were further evaluated for signs of impairment, and as a result of the checkpoint, one (1) person was arrested for DWI/DUI.

In addition to the checkpoint, a saturation patrol was conducted at the same time resulting in numerous citations to include driver using handheld device while operating a motor vehicle, failure to obey a traffic control device, and several warnings for other traffic violations. One (1) subject was also arrested and charged with DWI/DUI as a direct result of the saturation patrol.

The checkpoint was operated by members of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office along with assistance from allied agencies including the Maryland State Police and Maryland Natural Resources Police. Food donations were made by Sheetz of Cresaptown, Pizza Hut of Cumberland, Burger King of Cumberland, McDonald’s of Industrial Boulevard, Little Caesar’s of Industrial Boulevard, and M&M Bakery of Cumberland.
