Reward offered for information in the case of abandoned emaciated, ill dog

July 21st, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for abandoning a severely underweight dog at the Allegany County Animal Shelter in Cumberland, Maryland.

The Case: Allegany County Animal Shelter representatives stated that on July 14 at approximately 2:20 a.m., surveillance cameras at the shelter show a vehicle pulling up in the driveway. An individual is visible getting out of the vehicle carrying something wrapped in a blue sheet, believed to be a severely underweight adult male Great Dane/pit bull-type dog who was later discovered by staff that morning. The dog was too weak to stand and walk on his own.

Animal Cruelty: Securing the serious attention and engagement of law enforcement, prosecutors and residents in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the whole community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and many other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

“This emaciated dog desperately needed help, and there is no excuse for abandoning him in the middle of the night,” said Jennifer Bevan-Dangel, Maryland state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “We hope our reward helps find the person or persons responsible for the terrible condition this dog was found in.”

Allegany County Animal Control Officers are investigating this case. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the Allegany County Animal Shelter at 240-362-7518 or email info@ashelterofhope.com. The dog is currently recovering in veterinary care.
