Rhodes Defends City’s Flood Control Restrictions

Although one longtime local business owner is threatening to move out of Cumberland if the matter isn’t resolved- Cumberland City Administrator Jeff Rhodes says the city’s hands are tied when to comes to flood control easements. The federal government is putting pressure on the city of Cumberland to bring residents of Mechanic Street into compliance with an easement that calls for no trees, vegetation or structures to be within 10 feet of the Wills Creek flood control wall. Rhodes says while the laws have been on the books for decades, it has become something of a priority since Hurricane Katrina devastated much of New Orleans and surrounding portions of Louisiana and Mississippi in 2005. He says if the city doesn’t comply, there could be some serious ramifications:
