The LaVale Lions Club’s chicken barbeque fundraisers are popular events in Allegany County, with people from all over flocking to Lions Field in LaVale for chicken prepared in the Lions’ secret marinade. Each year, the Lions serve about 40,000 chicken meals. And it is that time of year again with the event set for this weekend, through Sunday. Also underway, the first River & Rails Festival which opened Friday and runs through Sunday at Canal Place and is free to the public. The event is a collaboration between Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Dee Dee Ritchie, Canal Place executive director, said that the goal was to kick off the proposed River Park at Canal Place project with a fundraiser that is also educational.
