Allegany County Board of Education vice-president, Dr. Edward Root, has been selected to serve on the Maryland Association of Boards of Education’s (MABE) Ad Hoc Committee on the Study of School Funding Adequacy in Maryland.  This committee will provide a forum for discussing and informing MABE’s participation in the Maryland State Department of Education’s “Cost of Adequacy of Education Funding in the State of Maryland Stakeholder Group” as well as the adequacy study being conducted by Augenblick, Palaich and Associates (APA) to conduct a comprehensive follow-up study of the landmark Thornton Commission on Education, Finance, Equity and Excellence.   Maryland’s Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act of 2002 was based on extensive funding adequacy cost studies.  In addition to establishing new standards-based primary state education aid funding formulas, the 2002 Act also called for a comprehensive follow-up funding adequacy study to be conducted beginning in 2014.  This follow-up study being conducted by APA is currently underway, and a stakeholder group has been established to guide their work.
