Rudd Comments on Commandments Monument Request

It was 14 years ago this month that the Allegany County Commissioners quietly decided to move the Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Allegany County Courthouse about 30 yards away to the neighboring Gilchrist Museum location. There was immediate pushback from the community and the commissioners quickly reversed the decision and had the monument moved back. Since that incident in 2004 there have been multiple requests from Garrett County resident Jeffrey Davis to permanent remove the marker.  In an attempt to halt those efforts- Edward Taylor, president of the nonprofit Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization, recently asked the county to examine all options that would guarantee the monument not be removed. County attorney William Rudd said given that the Maryland Historic Trust has final say on any proposed move- he thinks it’s highly unlikely such an action would be allowed anytime soon…
