Rural And Metropolitan Counties On The Same Page With Frustration With Annapolis

Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine says there was a different vibe flowing through the annual Maryland Association of Counties Summer Conference last weekend- smaller rural counties and major metropolitan counties are all on the same page. That page is one of anger and frustration with Annapolis and the growing number of state mandates, new regulations and the shifting of costs of some program from the state to the locals. The most glaring example is the state’s decision to gradually shift the cost of teacher pensions to county governments beginning this year. Valentine says it almost has become an “us against them” mindset with the wealthier counties joining the poorer ones in fighting a common “opponent”- the state…
