School Board And Commissioners To Meet Next Week To Discuss Role Of Ex-Officio Board Member

August 6th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

The August 5th deadline for the Allegany County Board of Education to address the concerns of the county commissioners on the question of the role of the ex-officio board member has passed- but the two sides have communicated. The dispute has centered on whether or not the county commissioner who sits on the school board in a non-voting ex-officio capacity has the right to sit in on closed or executive sessions.  Late last month, the commissioners sent a letter to the school board requesting a response by August 5th- or else the county would pursue legal action to force the issue. With the board president out of the country, the superintendent deeply involved in planning for the upcoming school year and the board attorney on vacation- getting together to address the issue has not been workable. County Attorney Bill Rudd told WCBC News Monday that he had received a response from School Board attorney Gary Hanna requesting the two sides talk next week. Board member Mike Llewellyn tells WCBC News that while there is a clear difference of opinion of the issue, the board has no desire to see it end up in court…
