School Board Approves 2015-2016 School Calendar

The Allegany County Board of Education recently approved its calendar for the 2015-2016 school year- with Monday, August 24th targeted as the first day of school for students.  If Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot had gotten his way, the startup would be September 8th. The Comptroller had aggressively campaigned for state legislation for a mandatory post-Labor Day start for public schools- however the bill failed to get out of committee. While perhaps disappointing to many students, it was a welcome piece of news for Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox who lobbied against the concept. Cox maintains that given the large number of weather related postponements that hit western Maryland schools- a two week delay to the school year could have been devastating and created a substantial amount of lost instruction time. He said he believes school calendar decisions should be handled by each county’s school board…
