School Board Candidates Surveyed on Blank’s Contract

April 20th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Emphasizing that the “technology is in place” to allow for interviews- Allegany County Board of Education President Tammy Fraley told WCBC News recently that the search for a new superintendent is moving forward. Earlier this month, Maryland’s state school superintendent Karen Salmon agreed to extend her contract another year on the job because of the coronavirus pandemic. Fraley, who also serves as Maryland Association of Boards of Education president-elect for 2019-2020, said that interviews can be conducted teleconferencing and/or a other technology. The board faces a July 1 deadline to appoint a superintendent. WCBC News surveyed the six non-incumbent candidates running for a seat on the school board- asking whether they support continuing the search inspite of the pandemic; or whether the board should extend the contract of interim superintendent Jeff Blank another year, allowing for a more stable interview process to take place later this year or early next.

Candidate Crystal Bender…

Candidate Michael Leptic…

Candidate Linda Widmyer…

Candidate Tony Ottaviani…

Again, I ask, with every thing else we have to worry about, why is this a thing right now? Sounds like the governor is in a mood to punt things down the road in the name of Covid, if the School Board wants something to do, start greasing skids on an extension to the the July 1 deadline.

I am 230% sure Widmyer hasn’t listened to Tammy’s interview or knows anything about the interview process. According to Tammy’s interview on WCBC the committee wouldn’t identify the candidates worthy of a first round interview till mid may and those are all a standardized generic interview of a set form of questions. That round would be fine to do electronically. The second wave of interviews wouldn’t come till the beginning of June and those are what we would typically think of as a interview and would held in person. That was the process as described by Tammy on this station. You’d think Dave would applaud them saving money doing electronic interviews the first round eliminating the expenditure of bringing the full candidate pool to town to asking them a standardized interview. If we are not out of this covid restriction by mid-may then it is time for the board to postpone. The described process doesn’t start interviews until after the May 15th opening of schools in Maryland.

Extend Blank’s contract for a year. It’s really simple he’s doing a good job and we shouldn’t change in the middle of this
