Local broadcasters met with Allegany County Public School officials yesterday to react to a proposal by the system that radio stations and cable television operators pay a fee to broadcast high school football.
Superintendent Dr. David Cox ran the meeting saying the board was looking for a nominal fee to help pay for new field turf at Greenway Avenue Stadium. Representatives from WCBC, Forever Media, Allegany Radio Corporation and Commercial Video Services strongly opposed the idea, saying any fee would cause an increase in the cost to advertisers, who are already facing a tough economy.
Board President Laurie Marchini and member Tammy Fraley were in attendance, and said they were merely looking for ways of closing a budget gap. The two said they would make a move during today’s work session to have the proposal removed from the agenda of tonight’s Board of Education meeting.
The broadcast group agreed to return to the table for a discussion on how the school system can help raise money to replace the aging field turf at Greenway.
