School Board Rejects Elimination of Commissioner Seat

The Allegany County Board of Education this week rejected a request from County Commissioner President Mike McKay to  have his ex-officio, or non-voting, seat on the board be discontinued. McKay, who was not in attendance at Tuesday’s Board meeting, said last week that the main reason for eliminating his seat is the strain on his schedule that attending each meeting has caused. What appeared to be a cut and dried issue was anything but, as the board discussed the situation at length before voting 4-0 to send a letter to the county and the delegation stating they do not support the elimination of McKay’s seat. Board members Mike Llewellyn and Nick Hadley both say that having no commissioner represented during school board meetings will further erode communication between the two boards…
