School Security Debated at Commissioner Meeting

For about 90 minutes on Thursday afternoon the Allegany County Commissioners and Board of Education debated the board’s request for an additional $500,000 for school security measures. The board is seeking the extra funds- above its regular operating budget- to provide for additional officers in the schools as well as mental health professionals. County Commissioner Bill Valentine began the discussion saying he was stunned to learn that two bills under consideration in Annapolis that would have provided state dollars for additional security personnel for every school in the state were rejected- primarily because they were opposed to by the Maryland Association of Board’s of Education…
