School Security Tops Agenda For Todays BOE Work Session

School security planning tops today’s work session agenda for the Allegany County Board of Education.  The issue has become a national priority since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in December- and gained momentum locally in March when the school board moved through its budget process. An initial request for an additional $500,000 in next years budget for more resource officers in the schools as well as mental health professionals was not enthusiastically received by the county commissioners who want to see a comprehensive plan developed by law enforcement in place before committing any funding.  The subject will be discussed as part of today’s meeting. School Board President Ed Root says that the indications he has gotten from law enforcement is that it would take years before new officers could be trained to be used for school security purposes.
