School system addressing bed bugs, lice

October 18th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Public School System has recently responded to specific instances of bed bugs and head lice in schools.  As always, ACPS staff is trained to follow the procedures outlined in the Integrated Pest Management policy for control pests in school buildings and on school grounds.  In recent years bed bugs have become more prevalent since certain pesticides have been banned due to their negative environmental impact.  For more detailed information on the Integrated Pest Management procedures, visit the school system’s website, www.acpsmd.org, and visit the Operations Department subpage.

Neither bed bugs nor lice carry diseases, however, the best method of preventing an infestation is regular inspection.  Parents can visit the following websites for more information on how to spot the signs of bed bug bites and the presence of head lice and what to do to treat and eliminate them: http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/bedbugs/; http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/gen_info/faqs.html.
