School System Hosts 4th Annual Entrepreneurial Showcase

The Allegany County Public School System hosted the 4thd Annual Allegany Partnership for Financial Education and Entrepreneurial Showcase on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Board of Education where students from Braddock, Mt. Savage, Washington, and Westmar presented business plans to local business and community partners. The event is a partnership between Allegany County Public Schools, EverFi, HRDC, and PNC Bank.  Dr. Kim Kalbaugh, Chief Academic Officer, and Mrs. Mia Cross, Public Information Officer, coordinated the event.

            Students were judged on their research, marketing, financial plans, and presentation. Middle school counselors assisted students with their proposals, and business/industry leaders served as mentors to the students.  Mentors included Kathy Getty, Matt Shipway, Gwendolyn McKenzie, Jennie Canan, and Mia Cross.

            Washington Middle School students won the event for the third year in a row. Aiden Burns, Lance Bender, Brayson Fleegle, Allison Schultz, and Andrew Swink were members of the winning team.  Their business proposal capitalized on the natural resources, such as Rocky Gap State Park, that are available in Western Maryland.  Their business name was the Allegany Outdoor Company. Mrs. Shawnee McElfish, school counselor, worked with the student groups at Washington on their proposals. 

            Other student participants included: Dean Arnold, Kyler Baker, Hailey Beining, Carley Clise, Mary Delaney, Eliza Duncan, Isabelle Duncan, Emma Komatz, Emilee Mash, Kamden Morgan, Molly Thompson, Sage Viera, Jaymielynne Williams, and Alicia Woods.

            Judges for the event were as follows: Stu Czapski, Allegany Chamber of Commerce; Jennie Canan, HRDC; Matt Miller, Cumberland Economic Development Corporation; Matt Shipway, Allegany County Government; Sam Michaels, EverFi; Kathy Getty, Banking/Community Member; and Kathryn Clay, PNC Bank.  Ashley Hart, EverFi, and Dr. Kim Kalbaugh co-hosted the competition.  Jason Huber, ACPS, served as the videographer for the event.
