Schools Out For Summer

School is out for summer in Allegany County- Friday was the last day for public schools. It was an eventful one that began with the Board of Education embroiled in controversy over its decision to phase out a program that had allowed students in the Little Orleans area to attend school in neighboring Washington County; and ended with the board receiving the go ahead from the state to proceed with planning to construct a new Allegany High School. In between the board had lengthy budget deliberations keeping a close on the ever changing fiscal picture in Annapolis. Superintendent David Cox tells WCBC News that the fiscal picture for the board has gotten gradually worse in the past three years- and the board has reduced its staff by more than 100 positions. He says although the goal is too keep the cuts from impacting the students in the classrooms- with staff cut so dramatically it is being felt system wide…
