A 6 month pilot scrap tire project has been approved by the Allegany County Commissioners to begin at the end of August. The county, in the past, has held special tire collection events sponsored by the Maryland Department of the Environment- but no state funding has been made available since 2009. Brian McCormack, a county engineer in the Public Works Department and vice chair of the Solid Waste Management Board, said that currently there are no private tire collection facilities located in the eastern end of the county and this has contributed to the illegal dumping of tires and the accumulation of scrap tires by r residents….
