Segment Of Community Would Rather See City High Schools Consolidated

With a number of hurdles having popped up during the process to secure funds for a new Allegany High School- there is a segment in the community that would rather see that project scrapped, and instead have the school board focus on working toward a new consolidated high school for Cumberland. A number of letters to the editor and opinion pieces have suggested that with population in the area having been declining steadily since the early 1970’s- it appears inevitable, that the local student population won’t justify two separate high schools. Allegany County Board of Education vice-president Ed Root says that consolidation idea was discussed at one point, but ultimately it was determined that building a new Allegany was the appropriate course of action. He said to halt the Allegany project at this point and work toward consolidation would require starting from scratch, and losing years in the process…
