Manchin says Trump has “golden opportunity” to push for stronger gun safety measures

August 21st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Senator Joe Manchin said that President Trump has a chance to demonstrate real leadership following recent tragedies- and he has encouraged him to take an active role in pushing for stronger gun safety legislation.  The West Virginia Democrat talked told "Face the Nation" he's been encouraged by the dialogue on reforms since the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. Manchin said the president, too, is "encouraged" by the approaches being discussed, but said Mr. Trump has made no promises to pressure Republican lawmakers to get a bill passed…

Mr. Trump says whatever will appeal to the audience that he’s speaking to. In the days immediately following the latest shootings He’s in favor of stringent background checks. Now,after being lobbied by the NRA, which translates to big campaign contributions, He’s backing down from his initial, so called, promises.
He’s untrustworthy, obviously, and has the strength of character of a used car salesman. I apologize to used car salesman for the unfair association.

There are already stringent background checks to buy a firearm. Anyone who has purchased one already knows this. The proposal to beef up background checks applies mostly to private sales which account for a very small percentage of gun sales among the law-abiding public. Criminals will continue to acquire guns on the black market as they have in the past. Passing this regulation will do little or nothing since no mass shooting has ever been shown to have used a weapon from a private sale.
