Serious Accident on Interstate 81

(Hagerstown, MD) – On July 17, 2013 at approximately 1525 hrs. Troopers from the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barracks and Fire/EMS personnel responded to the area of southbound IS-81 near the 1 mile marker in reference to a serious motor vehicle collision.

The collision involved a 1993 Mack Truck and a 2013 Hyundai passenger vehicle. The Hyundai passenger vehicle was traveling south in lane 2 and for unknown reasons lost control and struck the center median guardrail. After striking the guardrail, the Hyundai traveled across both southbound lanes and was struck by the Mack truck. After this collision, both vehicles traveled off the roadway.

Ronald Plotnick of Fortuna, CA was the driver of the Hyundai and was flown by MedStar to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, MD. The driver of the Mack Truck Mark Dunham (37 yoa) of Martinsburg, WV was transported to Meritus Medical Center by ambulance. The passenger of the Mack Truck, Brice Sparkman (43 yoa) of Bunker Hill, WV was also transported to Meritus Medical Center by ambulance.

Southbound IS-81 was temporarily shut down due to the landing of the helicopter. One lane was closed for approximately 2 hours due to further investigation of the collision.

State Highway Administration and the Washington County Sheriffs department assisted with traffic direction and lane closure. At 6:11pm, the Interstate was completely re-opened.

The collision is still under investigation and charges are pending.
