Several Businesses Spark Productive Year of Economic Development

A new Blue Cross/Blue Shield facility; record number of employees at American Woodmark and expansions for Pen Mar Recycling, Schroeder Industries and Beltway Company among the highlights of a relatively productive year for Allegany County’s Economic Development Department. The local economic development effort came into question this past summer when outgoing Frostburg mayor and former longtime county commissioner Arthur Bond made comments suggesting that the department had “dropped the ball” in recent years. Allegany County Economic Director Matt Diaz tells WCBC News that despite numerous challenges created by the national recession, attracting business to the region can also be difficult given some of the hurdles created by the state
