Severe winter costs kids Easter vacation days

March 16th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Mineral County students will only have a short Easter break this year, thanks to Mother Nature. The Mineral Tribune reports the Mineral County Board of Education moved this week to change Wednesday, April 24, Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26 from Outside School Environment days to instructional days. Previously, during the March 5 meeting, the board members had approved changing Tuesday, April 23, to an instructional day. The change will mean county students now only have Good Friday (April 19) and Easter Monday (April 22) off from school. They had previously made up a snow day on Feb. 18. Many of these days are built into the calendar as makeup days for closures due to inclement weather, but any additional days will now have to be made up at the end of the school year in June. According to the original calendar, the last day of school for students was to be Thursday, June 6. Technically, however, makeup days may be scheduled through June 28. The state of West Virginia mandates that students must be in school a total of 180 days per school year.
