The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) is reconstructing the right lane on one mile of westbound I-68 (National Freeway) at the Garrett and Allegany County line. Weather permitting, the $707,000 project will be complete before Memorial Day.
This section of I-68 has heavy tractor trailer traffic volumes. Crews will mill (remove the top layer of asphalt) and apply concrete to better handle heavy truck loads and preserve the pavement on westbound I-68.
SHA’s contractor, Triton Construction, Inc. of St. Albans, West Virginia, will also patch the base roadway as necessary and restripe the travel lanes on I-68. Crews will close the truck “climbing lane” or the third lane and right shoulder for the duration of the project. Crews will close an additional lane, for a total of two lanes, between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Sundays through Fridays.
The extended lane closure of the climbing lane will be in place for concrete curing and will remain closed over the upcoming weekend, but two lanes will be open to accommodate holiday traffic. Approximately 22,000 vehicles travel on this section of I-68 daily so motorists should plan extra travel time. SHA will use barrels, dynamic message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.
While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
