November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and the Allegany County Animal Shelter is waiving all adoption fees on all senior dogs and cats for the month of November. A senior dog or cat is one that is five years or older.
“We are full of dogs and cats of all shapes, sizes and ages, but senior pets are generally the most difficult to place,” commented Tina Rafferty, Executive Director of the shelter. “There are plenty of benefits to selecting an older pet over a younger one. Generally speaking senior pets are calmer and less energetic than puppies and kittens. Many seniors are already housebroken and know some basic commands. Often a senior pet is ideal for households with older adults and with children because of they tend to be low key.”
All animals adopted from the shelter are up-to-date on shots and are microchipped. Adoptions include spay or neuter and all dogs receive their county dog license.
“We are at the brink of the holiday season and it’s a great time to provide a home for a shelter pet,” Rafferty added. “We have lots of seniors that are loving, healthy animals that would love to have a loving home of their own.
