An overdose death by way of illegal narcotics used to come as somewhat shocking news when one occurred in the area- however the growing heroin crisis across Maryland has unfortunately made these incidents all too common. Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson says there is no hiding the problem. Across Maryland, sheriff's deputies now treat overdose scenes as a crime scene, not to target the addict, but to try to track the dealers. Investigators call them commuter dealers, getting their supply in Baltimore, then selling in public places throughout the state, with a growing market in Allegany County. Looking at the regional numbers, just this year, there have been 120 heroin overdoses in Washington County, 13 of which were fatal. In Allegany County, there were 19 fatal overdoses so far in 2016. Sheriff Robertson said the illegal drug activity is taxing the department’s resources and manpower hours:
