The Allegany County Sheriffs Office is advising the public of a recent IRS scam. The scam consists of calls stating the resident is being sued due to back taxes and is requiring immediate payment. If they are met with objection by the victim they immediately begin threatening bodily harm. The caller and/or recording claims they are either with the IRS and/or FBI.
The Sheriff's Office urges that anyone who has received these calls or who may receive a call from these individuals to hang up immediately. Do not provide any information nor engage in any conversation with the caller. This has been an on-going scam which has unfortunately affected many residents in Allegany County and on today's date, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) received approximately thirty (30) calls in reference to this particular scam.
