Shift In Teacher Pensions A Major Concern Among County Governments

One of the major concerns among county governments heading into the 2012 Maryland General Assembly is how lawmakers and the governor would handle a possible shift of the cost of teacher pensions. Governor Martin O’Malley, after being an outspoken opponent of shifting the cost from the state to locals, did an about face early in the session- advocating that half of the cost be shifted this year. Lawmakers have resisted that idea, but both the House and the Senate have approved plans that would shift the cost- although over the course of several years. State Senator George Edwards says at this point it is anybodys guess as to how it plays out in the waning days of the session…
