Early Saturday morning, at approximately 12:30 AM, Deputies of the Allegany county Sheriff’s Office responded to Rt. 220 in the area of Danville Hill for a reported multi-vehicle crash with injuries.
The Allegany County area was experiencing a snowfall in which the snow had melted and created treacherous icy conditions.
Deputies arrived on scene and pursuant to the investigation and witness testimony discovered that a 2005 Chevrolet car, being operated by 24 year old Samuel Hartman of Keyser WV, was traveling S/B on Rt. 220 at a speed greater than reasonable for the road conditions. As Hartman crested Danville Hill he slid onto the shoulder and struck a 1997 Acura, being driven by 23 year old Jonathan Hsu of Derwood, MD, who had pulled on the shoulder due to the icy hill. Hartman’s car then struck another vehicle, a 2002 Toyota being driven by 23 year old Ronald Smith of Keyser WV, that was also pulled onto the shoulder due to the ice.
A fourth vehicle, a 2003 Kia being driven by 18 year old Trystyn Ohaver-Copple of Keyser, WV, was cresting the hill when the accident occurred and attempted to stop to avoid the collisions. Her vehicle slid onto the shoulder and struck the car being driven by Hsu.
Hartman was charged with the following:
Driving vehicle in excess of reasonable speed
Failure to control vehicle speed to avoid a collision
Driving on a suspended out of state license
One passenger in Hartman’s vehicle was transported to WMRMC for observation
Rt. 220 was shut down in the area for quite some time awaiting the arrival of SHA plow/salt trucks and the removal of two of the vehicles involved.
Cresaptown Fire Department/Ambulance and Rawlings Fire Department responded to the scene.
