State Slots Amendments Slowed

August 10th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Senate today is debating and will likely take a final vote on a bill to expand gambling in Maryland.

WBAL reports Senators are also likely to take a final vote on a bill that responds to a Maryland Court of Appeals decision that defines pit bulls as an "inherently dangerous" breed of dog, holding pit bull owners and their landlords automatically responsible for any injuries the dogs may cause.

The debate comes on the second day of a special legislative session.

On the gambling issue, the Senate is considering  amendments to a bill that received approval in the Budget and Taxation Committee last night.

The bill adds a sixth casino in Prince George's County, and legalizes table games such as black jack.

Casinos in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and Worcester County would see lower tax rates to make up for a loss of a business due to competition from the sixth casino.

Senate President Mike Miller has told Senators that depending on the length of today's debate, a final vote may be put off until tomorrow.
