Small fire at South Penn

On Wednesday morning, a a fire in a second floor bathroom’s soap dispenser was discovered at South Penn Elementary School.  Staff and students were evacuated, and the Cumberland City Fire Department and various law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.  The fire was put out using a fire extinguisher.  Staff and students have been returned to the building and have been relocated to the first floor while clean-up is in progress.  Classes will resume as normal utilizing classrooms, the gym and the cafeteria on the first floor.  The school health nurse will examine any student who may be experiencing asthma-like conditions as a result of the fire and use of the extinguisher. A 7 year old boy has been charged as a result.
