Special Meeting of Canal Place Scheduled for Today

October 3rd, 2013 by WCBC Radio

A special meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority today could help answer some questions pertaining to its fiscal future. Letters from Authority Chair Andy Vick to Cumberland Mayor Brian Grim and Allegany County Commissioner Mike McKay last month requesting additional hotel/motel tax revenues for Canal Place were met with rejection on both fronts. Both Grim and Mckay emphasized that local government had lived up to its previously agreed upon commitment of providing funding for a five year period- and that now its time for the Authority to become more self sustaining. Another option could be to seek funding from the state. Mckay’s response went as far as to say that it might be time to restructure management and operations, while Grim said he was disappointed in leadership at Canal Place. Despite both mens obvious frustration, neither is ready to write off Canal Place as a lost cause…
