Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said this week he will call a special session of the General Assembly to avert about $512 million in budget cuts as soon as the House and Senate can reach consensus on how to pass a revenue package needed to make up the money. Many state Republicans, however, say the state can survive what Democrats call a "doomsday budget" passed by the legislature last week and that a special session to fix the plan and raise taxes is not necessary.
