Special Session This Week To Address Re-drawing of Congressional Boundaries

Maryland’s general assembly gathering in Annapolis this week for the start of a special session designed to address the issue of re-drawing congressional boundaries. A plan proposed by a committee appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley would drastically alter western Maryland’s sixth district. The district has been represented by Republican Roscoe Bartlett for two decades, and many in the GOP believe the governor’s plan is politically motivated- bringing a large part of the more liberal and more democratic Montgomery County into the district. Although re-districting is the reason the session is being held, any lawmaker can bring any issue to the table for consideration- and issues such as a jobs bill and a variety of tax hikes are rumored to be on the agenda of some delegates. Delegate Leroy Myers talked with WCBC News and said that while he has heard those rumblings as well, he is hopeful that the focus remains on congressional re-districting…
