State General Services Visits Canal Place for Appraisal

June 25th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

During this month's meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, Executive Director Dee Dee Ritchie reported that officials with the Maryland Department of General Services recently made two visits to Canal Place and plans to get a complete appraisal of the complex. The objective is to have multiple state agencies involved in a thorough review of Canal Place to better understand the financial struggles faced by the tourism hub. Mike McKay, president of the Allegany County Commission, has been vocal in his disappointment with the Canal Place authority recently- and said at a candidates forum this month that  no more state money should be spent on Canal Place. He said the tourism hub needs a new business model. Newly appointed chair Rick Thayer couldn’t disagree more. He says the number of activities and visitors to Canal Place is shooting upward- and now is not the time to change course.
