The Maryland Senate is expected to approve its version of a state budget this week. There are four budget bills approved by the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. The bills include the broadest increase in the state's income tax since 1997. Senate President Mike Miller notes the Senate plan includes an additional $600-million in spending cuts, if senators reject the tax increases. The bill also shifts half the cost of teacher pensions from the state to county governments over four years. The governor had wanted to do that $450-million shift in one year.
