Maryland Trooper injured in Sideling Hill accident

June 9th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Two people, including a Maryland State Police trooper assigned to the McHenry barrack, were injured late Thursday in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 68 at Sideling Hill in Washington County. Sgt. L. Broadwater was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore following the accident just before 11 p.m. on eastbound I-68 at the 74-mile marker, state police at the Hagerstown barrack said. His condition was not available Friday.

The Cumberland Times News reports Broadwater was reportedly driving a marked police cruiser with emergency equipment activated and escorting an oversized tractor-trailer when the cruiser was struck from behind by a Freightliner truck tractor driven by Ronald Ovey Shambaugh of Cumberland. The Shambaugh vehicle also hit a second escort vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet Venture van driven by Philip K. Armbrecht of Evansville, Wisconsin, police said.

Broadwater suffered back and neck injuries and Armbrecht was transported by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, for treatment of minor injuries. Shambaugh was not transported to a hospital, according to a police report.

The state police crash team and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division assisted with the investigation.

Police said charges are pending.
