A mother delivered her baby boy on the side of the road on Interstate 695 with the help of two Maryland State Police troopers Thursday night.

A motorist pulled onto the shoulder of I-695 at 10:45 p.m. where First Sgt. Edward Luers and Trooper First Class Zachary Mills, from the JFK Barracks, were working overtime at an I-695 construction site.

The driver got out of his car and ran over to the troopers to tell them his wife was having intense labor pains.

The troopers called for emergency medical service personnel and ran to the wife to administer aid. They recognized the mother’s labor pains were becoming worse.

Mills placed himself in a position to assist with the delivery and with one push, the baby boy was delivered into his arms, officials said. The baby was swaddled in towels the family had with them and put on the mother's stomach.

Five minutes later, EMS arrived and took the newborn and his family to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
