The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline has gone up and down again this week, while Maryland’s average trended slowly downward. However, gas prices in the days ahead will most certainly head in one direction, upward, as the Texas Gulf Coast, home to 15 percent of the country’s oil refinery production, braces for Hurricane Harvey. Today’s national average of $2.35 is up a penny over last week, seven cents more than a month ago and 15 cents more expensive than a year ago. Maryland’s average cost at the pump is six cents less than the national average at $2.29 per gallon. The state’s cost reflects a drop of two cents from a week ago, but a penny increase compared to last month’s price and a 10 cent per gallon rise over last year’s price. In Cumberland prices continue to hold steady at $2.37
