Stolen Vehicle Ends Up in Potomac River

On Thursday, August 10, 2017 at approximately 10:00 AM, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a York Street business in reference to a motor vehicle theft.  Officers were informed that a 2014 Kia Sorento had been stolen.  The vehicle had initially been at the business to have repairs made.  Officers continued to investigate and search for the vehicle throughout the day.  At approximately 6:45 PM, officers were dispatched to the Potomac River in the area of Elizabeth Street for a vehicle partially submerged in the river.  Officers discovered that the submerged vehicle was the reported stolen vehicle.  The vehicle was unoccupied at this time.  The Allegany County Swift Water Rescue Team and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources also responded to assist.  The case is still currently under investigation.  The Cumberland Police Department is requesting that anyone with any information regarding this case to please contact the Cumberland City Police at 301-777-1600 or Allegany County Crime Solvers at 301-722-4300.
