After three unsuccessful tries in the Maryland General Assembly, state lawmakers last spring finally approved a bill adding Worcester to the list of eight other counties on the Eastern Shore that allow a limited number of slot machines in service clubs and fraternal organizations in an effort to enhance their fundraising efforts. Although Western Maryland operations would like to be included- local lawmakers said its unlikely any additional slots are available in Allegany County until after the Rocky Gap slot parlor is up and running. A slots license is expected to be awarded for Rocky Gap as soon as next month. Delegate Kevin Kelly says despite growing gaming operations in neighboring states that is putting Maryland in a poor position to compete for gambling revenue- there is a large number of lawmakers, as well as the governor who are not inclined to expand to additional slots or table games.
