Allegany College of Maryland men’s basketball players and other students are again teaming up for “Hoops for Hunger,” a food drive that will help the Western Maryland Food Bank help area families in need. Fans at ACM’s “Christmas Classic” tournament, scheduled Dec. 2-3, are asked to bring a bag of non-perishable food items to the gymnasium door, which will secure them entry in place of an admission fee. Canned fruit, vegetables and meat as well as dried pasta and jarred sauce, peanut butter and breakfast cereal are among the items that will help the local food pantry replenish its shelves.

“This holiday season give the gift of support to those in need,” said Tommie Reams, head men’s basketball coach. “Our second annual Hoops for Hunger Food Drive is a great way to help.”

Students in developmental education classes have partnered with the men’s basketball team in the campus food drive. In addition to gate-free admission, those who donate a bag of groceries are eligible to enter a drawing for a gift card.

“It's very rewarding to see groups of students working together, toward the same cause with others' needs in mind,” said Ashley Dively, coordinator of developmental education.

The ACM Trojans are hosting three teams in the two-day tournament – Butler County (Pa.) Community College, Community College of Beaver County (Pa.) and Hagerstown Community College.

The action begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, with a game between Beaver and Hagerstown followed at 7 p.m. with ACM vs. Butler. Play resumes the following day at 1 p.m. with Butler facing Hagerstown and again at 3 p.m. with ACM against Beaver.

“We hope all of you can donate and support this wonderful cause and we appreciate all the support you give our basketball family and this community,” Reams added.

“We all get busy and wrapped up in the holiday season, but we so often forget there are those in need right in our own communities,” Dively observed.
