Support Growing To Remove Civil War Plaque In State House

June 12th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Support is growing on a four-member panel to remove a plaque from Maryland’s Capitol that honors the Civil War’s Union and Confederate soldiers from the state and once showed a Confederate flag that has been covered over.

House Speaker Adrienne Jones renewed her push to have the plaque removed in a letter Thursday. Last year, a four-member panel that oversees the Capitol and its grounds voted to cover a logo from the sign showing the U.S. and Confederate flags crossed. It was covered with an image of the Maryland state flag, but the sign remained after a 3-1 vote.

Jones, who is Maryland’s first black House speaker, wrote that the plaque “is not a symbol that belongs in our seat of government.”

“The language of this plaque still remains which sympathizes with the Confederacy,” Jones wrote. “The past two weeks have reignited our national conversation about the systemic racial injustice that continues throughout the United States of America.”

The death of George Floyd in Minnesota last month after a police officer pressed a knee on his neck until he stopped breathing have prompted protests in cities across the country.

Senate President Bill Ferguson, who became Senate president in January, is supporting Jones’ proposal to remove the plaque.

Someone should tell Ed Taylor about this. Maybe he could grab the plaque and put it in the Confederate cemetery that he celebrates every year.

Why don’t we all just bow down and get rid of history all together. Seems like we are moving backwards as a nation not forward. Other countrys are watching us and loving us attacking and watching our Great Nation dividing .

Not getting rid of all history – just bad history.

        > Did not know history could have adjectives. History is history no matter HOW much you wish it were not so. Embrace and learn from ALL of it.

I do learn from all history. I’ve learned that the white Europeans who settled this country basically wiped out the vast majority of native Americans to further our manifest destiny and acquire their land. I’ve learned that white southern land owners enslaved an entire race of people to work as unpaid field hands to build wealth for themselves and then fought a war to keep their slaves. I’ve learned that in the war in Vietnam we lost 58,000 American servicemen when our government hid for years the fact that it was an un-winnable war. I’ve learned that we went to war in Iraq under the false narrative that Saddam threatened the world with weapons of mass destruction and we had 4500 American servicemen killed along with several hundred thousand Iraqi civilians. Yes, I do believe that history has many, many adjectives that apply.

You can tell how good life is by the minute things that bother people. When people have to spend most of your waking hours putting food on the table and a roof over your head, whether there is a plaque in Annapolis that says something about a war that was 150 years ago is not high up on your list. Is the House Speaker telling us that everything in Maryland so so good that the next big item on the legislation agenda is that plaque? Or is she just flexing her “muscles” for a private want? Of all the problems we have at this time what a plaque says or even exists is something that needs addressed? I would dare say a large number of people, especially young people, don’t even know when the civil war was or even care. Is she so delicate that every mention of the Confederacy upsets her? Like the woman who was afraid when she saw the Negro Mountain sign, when she came from Chicago where people are murdered everyday, while to my knowledge no one has ever been murdered on that mountain. Why stop with a plaque and statues, why not did up all the bodies of everyone we disagree with and burn their bones, like some do their cities? Personally I will die a happy man whether the plaque goes or stays. What bothers me is people who can’t stand ANY viewpoint but theirs. Be careful of riding your world of the things you don’t agree with, as has happened in the past the tables may turn. President Lincoln and MLK tried to unite the country, the new sport today is to point out our differences and divide our country. Be careful of what you wish for!!!

We’re not talking about a “viewpoint”, as you say. We’re talking about a plaque commemorating a rebellion led by traitors to the USA who fought a war that killed 600K people over the continuation of enslaving a race of people. No, it’s not a huge priority and it probably wouldn’t have even come up if not for the worldwide, massive protests but a new broom sweeps clean.

The Speaker tried to remove the plaque last year so I don’t think it’s correct to say “it probably wouldn’t have ever come up if not for the worldwide massive protests”. I don’t know her heart but it looks like a self aggrandising agenda to me about something we both agree is not a huge priority. I am in no way coming to the defence of the Confederate cause. Slavery is wrong and always has been wrong for the five or six thousand years it has been around.. We got rid of it here 150 years ago, as you noted at a huge cost. However it still exists today, if you want a cause go after there it is. Your statement about “a rebellion led by traitors” Is it fair to say that the group in Seattle are traitors to our country and should be dealt with as the southern states were? They say they have broken away from the USA. Not sure I see the difference. Another thing that makes me wonder. The Supreme Court ruled that it was OK to hold slaves because they weren’t equal to whites, sort of non persons, which we have corrected and we all agree that was wrong. However in 1973 the Supreme Court ruled that someone who is unborn is a non person and it is OK to kill them, with their mother’s permission. How is that different? The whole pretext is non personhood, wrong then, right now. Just something I haven’t had anyone be able to explain to me, except someone is making a boat load of money from it.

Your anger certainly comes through loud and clear Martin. Unfortunately, the all caps, poor syntax and sentence structure, and misspellings don’t say much for your language arts background.
