Survey: Many Maryland Drivers Fail To Stop For School Buses

September 7th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

A new study shows that Maryland drivers failed to stop for halted school buses more than 4,300 times in one day this year.

Media outlets report that in a single-day survey of about three-fourths of all Maryland school bus drivers from April, the Maryland State Department of Education found drivers committed 4,326 violations for failing to stop near school buses with their lights flashing and "stop" arms extended.

Under Maryland law, it's illegal to drive around school buses in these situations.

The new figure is short of the highest ever counted – 7,011 violations in 2011. However, officials say the figure is still too high.

Gov. Larry Hogan recently released more than $50,000 in funds to local law enforcement agencies to help them enforce bus safety laws. School districts are discussing other measures that could be taken.
