On Tuesday afternoon, 02/28/2012, the West Virginia State Police arrested 41 year old Chanin Allison Clark, of Slanesville, West Virginia, after a warrant for his arrest had been obtained by Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I). Clark was wanted in connection with an assault which occurred in a bathroom at the Sears located in the Country Club Mall in LaVale.

On Monday, 02/27/2012, the Maryland State Police responded to Sears for a reported assault. They interviewed the 77 year old male victim and learned that while he was in the bathroom, a lone male suspect attacked him without provocation and for no known reason. The suspect repeatedly struck the victim in the face and knocked him to the ground. The victim, who thought the suspect was going to rob him, fought back, and the suspect fled. The victim suffered a bloody lip, an injured hand, and an injured shoulder. The victim was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and released.

The store’s video surveillance was reviewed, and video of the suspect, who was in the company of a female, was obtained. Still photos of the suspect and the female were provided to the media for publication.

Numerous tips were received by law enforcement after the photos appeared in the media. C3I Investigators traveled to Romney and interviewed numerous witnesses. With the assistance of the Romney Police Department, the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office, and the West Virginia State Police, Clark was developed as a suspect.

In addition to the arrest warrant, Investigators were able to obtain search warrants for two different private residences in the Romney area. Investigators were able to recover the clothing being worn by the suspect and the female at the time of the incident, as well as additional evidence connecting Clark to the crime.

Clark has been charged with assault, and is incarcerated in West Virginia pending extradition to Maryland. Additional charges are pending and additional arrests are anticipated.

The investigation is continuing by the Maryland State Police and C3I.
