Synthetic Drugs Discussed At Annual Drug Symposium

The Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy held its Annual Symposium on Drug Prevention, Intervention and Treatment Wednesday, and the focus this year was synthetic drugs. Synthetic or “fake drugs” have been growing in popularity among students in Maryland- and all too often the results can be tragic. Locally, Allegany County officials have taken an aggressive, pro-active approach to the problem. A law banning most of the substances and possible derivatives already exists in Allegany County. Delegate Kevin Kelly worked with Sheriff Craig Robertson and county commissioners to initiate the county law last year. While Maryland bans bath salts and some synthetic drugs, the existing laws and regulations aren’t comprehensive and manufacturers and sellers often manage to skirt prosecution. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene had recommended a statewide solution.
