Talks Continuing For Use Of Railroad Bridge

June 14th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County officials last month questioned plans to use a county-owned railroad bridge as a spur trail into Cumberland’s North Side.  The plan, proposed by Mountain Maryland Trails, would convert the bridge into a bicycle/pedestrian bridge linking the Great Allegheny Passage trail and the city. The major concerns expressed to date involve the cost of maintaining the bridge, lead paint on the bridge and safety issues. The bridge is the old Western Maryland Railway Bridge at Wills Creek and Mechanic Street, across from Southern States. The bridge would be decked to accommodate bikers and hikers, with the work to be funded by local and private funding sources- with an estimated price tag of $75,000. Trails President Nicole Wagoner said that while talks are continuing, nothing is imminent with the project…
