The office of the Allegany County States Attorneyannounced Tuesday, that Bart Allan Mazer has pleaded guilty in connection with charges stemming from sexual involvement with two of his students. The Mountain Ridge High School teacher pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sex offense in each of two cases when he appeared in Allegany County Circuit Court before Judge W. Timothy Finan. Finan ordered a pre-sentencing investigation that routinely takes up to eight weeks to complete. The judge accepted the pleas after the state presented a factual basis for the guilty plea in both cases. Mazer was charged following C3I investigations into allegations that Mazer was sexually involved with two female students at Mountain Ridge in two separate time periods. Mazer was placed on administrative leave without pay by the Allegany County Board of Education since the charges were filed. The C3I investigation included cooperation from Mountain Ridge's administration and board of education. Conviction of fourth-degree sex offense carries a sentence ranging from probation to six months in jail, a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. The state will also ask for Mazer’s sentence to include he be required to register as a convicted sex offender. Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Jacqueline R. Brandlen represented the state. Cumberland attorney R. Steven Friend represented Mazer.
