The Cumberland City Council is expected to appoint Captain Chuck Ternent  as interim police chief next month when Chief Charle Hinnant’s retirement becomes official.  Ternent, the longest serving member of the department with 26 years’ service, and has been serving as  second in command, overseeing administrative and operation functions.  Ternent is  also a 30-year member of the Good Will Volunteer Fire Company, where he currently serves as a lieutenant. He spent 16 years in emergency medical services as a paramedic, cardiac rescue technician and emergency medical technician. A graduate of Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University, Ternent earned a master’s degree in management at Johns Hopkins University, where he also earned a certificate in the Police Executive Leadership Program in 2008. Meanwhile applications are being accepted for the city of Cumberland’s chief of police position with advertisements for the position were running in the Times News this past week.  According to City Administrator Jeff Rhodes the  city of Cumberland is also advertising for applications through the Maryland Municipal League, the Maryland Association of Counties, the Maryland Municipal League Police Executives Association, the Maryland Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs’ Association and the city of Cumberland website, City Administrator Jeff Rhodes. A selection committee will be formed to take part in the hiring process and officials hope to have a new chief in office in the first quarter of 2020. Applications will be accepted through Nov. 22. The salary range for the position is $61,222 to $113,693.
