Mr. Thomas Carr, Vice President of the Garrett County Board of Education, resigned from the Board at the beginning of the February 14, 2017, meeting. Mr. Carr recently moved and no longer lives in the district in which he was elected to represent. Based on information received from the Garrett County Elections Board and recommendations from legal counsel, Mr. Carr resigned effective immediately.
Carr has been an active member of the Garrett County Board of Education since January 2007. He served as Board of Education president for two terms and is active on several committees serving the school system, including Policy Development and Revision, Federal Program Advisory, Food & Nutrition Services Advisory Council, and the Fine Arts Advisory.
Interim Superintendent Barbara Baker stated “Mr. Carr has served the Board of Education for ten years. During that time he has been a champion for our teachers and especially for our students! In addition, he has been an integral part of the formation of the Garrett County Public Schools Foundation. It has been my pleasure and honor to work with Mr. Carr and he will surely be missed.”
Previously, Carr served on the MD Governor's P-20 Committee and continues to be active in clubs and organizations, including Oakland Rotary (Secretary 2005-current), Rotary International, Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers (Discovery Center), Little Meadows Chapter, and Sons of the American Revolution (Secretary 2015- current). A retired, career educator, Mr. Carr served 27 years as a teacher and administrator at a private school in Baltimore. He moved to Garrett County and taught for ten years at Frostburg State University, where he was also a foreign student advisor.
The Garrett County Board of Commissioners will appoint a Board member to replace Carr.
